Liverpool Labour is proud to announce the return of the city’s celebrated River of Light festival for its eighth year, running from Friday 24 October to Sunday 2 November. This year’s theme, The Science of Light, promises a dazzling showcase of ten large-scale light installations spread along the iconic Liverpool waterfront, Royal Albert Dock, Pier Head, Exchange Flags, and Liverpool ONE.
The festival remains free for all residents and visitors, reaffirming Labour’s pledge to invest in inclusive cultural events that bring communities together and boost Liverpool’s local economy. In 2024, a record number of visitors attended, generating over £18.9 million for the city, with local businesses, families, and artists all reaping the benefits.
Liverpool Labour’s approach stands in stark contrast to the direction taken by the Reform-led administration in Durham, where, from 2026, the city will see its renowned Lumiere light festival cancelled due to funding cuts and lack of commitment from Reform councillors. While Durham loses one of its best-loved public celebrations, Liverpool continues to put people first, ensuring free, world-class cultural experiences for everyone.
Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing & Culture, said:
“River of Light is one of the stand-out moments every year for Liverpool—a joyful celebration that brings people together, fills our streets with creativity, and sparks wonder for thousands of residents and visitors. At a time when some cities are turning their backs on culture and community, Liverpool Labour is doubling down on investing in free public events that lift spirits and support our local economy. We’re committed to building a city where everyone has access to art, inspiration, and a sense of pride. I can’t wait to share this festival with the people of Liverpool once again.”
